Following the UFC 254 lightweight fight between Khabib Nurmagomedof and Justin Gaethje, Khabib announced his retirement from fighting. After defending his 29-0 lightweight record, he broke the news, after his father passed away as a result of COVID-19. His father had been training and working with him throughout his fighting career, and he did not want to continue any further without him.
Gaethje’s fight style was landing him some hits on Khabib, giving Gaethke the first round and making a lot of Khabib fans uneasy. In the second round, Khabib got Gaethje on the ground and choked him out to take the win, Gaethje woke up quickly after. Gaethje then embraced Khabib as he fell to his knees in tears about the loss of his father.
Khabib stated that this was not a publicity stunt and that he had thought about his decision for a while. He left his gloves in the octagon, a tradition for fighters at the end of their career. Khabib will be added to the UFC Hall of Fame and go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
